PS2 and earlier generally used X for confirm and triangle for cancel.

That makes LOGICAL FUCKING SENSE, as well as matches up functionally with Nintendo's A & B in the same position, so when you go from a Nintendo to Sony console you don't have to rewire your brain backwards.

Based on what I’ve seen, most Japanese seem fine with it.
There has apparently been quite a bit of inconsistency with the use of O and X on their versions of UI for a while now so the change fixes that a bit.
There will likely be an option to change it back to O anyways like you could with the JP PS4.
But of course Zig Forums will try to portray this as the end of the world for some reason.

I distinctly remember pressing x at the start screen and kept going back and was confused as fuck.

The game was severely delayed (characters falling through the floor and soft locking during battles. They still do) and by the point they got it out the policy change had gone through but the artwork was already done.
