>start a japanese game
>cringe within 5 seconds
why are they always so atrocious with their writing? do they not have any concept of subtlety?
Start a japanese game
My assumption is that their society is generally closed-off and rigid and therefore their media is extremely bombastic and melodramatic to account for it. I've also never been to Japan, never met a Japanese person, and know almost nothing about Japan that doesn't come from the occasional anime and racist shitposting, so you can trust me.
Japs are the masters of deep dialogue (and monologue)
Still infinitely better than western trash
Metal Gear is cringe for this reason.
>ITT: People who are unable to beat the tutorial will try to shit all over a game they never played.
better than shitlib western rubbish
ITT: People who think beating the easy ass tutorial for nier (even on the one hit modes) makes them a superior gamer defend coomer bait
The Japanese language is so dramatically different to English that most of the time you'll never get the true tone of the writing, especially when a lot of their writing has puns and stuff that don't really translate well into the English language at all unless there they literally insert the hepburn romanized Japanese word with an annotation as to what it means.
You have to literally learn Japanese to grasp the full and intented meaning of most of the media, but of course you can still enjoy translated materials as I do, some material does surpass the limitations of the translation even if it's still inferior to the source material, the same goes with Russian, for example when reading those books considered greats (as a person from Russia myself), the tone in those considered great novels are lost even in those translations considered the best, the only thing that will help you grasp the original context without learning the original language is heavy annotative text. Just because a story sometimes can overcome the limitations of translation does not mean those that can't are necessarily bad stories.
>do they not have any concept of subtlety?
are you seriously asking that
have you watched like 10 seconds of any anime, its like those indian soap operas
And to add to that, yes, of course, some stories are just plain shit in themselves.
even acting is different
>I've also never been to Japan, never met a Japanese person, and know almost nothing about Japan that doesn't come from the occasional anime and racist shitposting
Good enough for me. Let me repost this anytime a Japanese game is discussed.
>judging the japanese by how westerners have localized their media
woah bro... cool it with the racism??????
>why are they always so atrocious with their writing?
They are written in japanese for japanese people and usually make some sort of sense. But sometimes the direct translation is stupid and there's no localization that maps well. That's why you end up with "he'll die if he's killed!' and stuff like that.
>That's why you end up with "he'll die if he's killed!' and stuff like that.
So what you're saying is it can't be helped?
yeah except AC is far from full-anime like Nier, very clearly has it in there but it's the in the medium area between east and west. It's really showing how excellent Japanese writing can be when it's not extreme anime and tempered by western stuff, kinda like Metal Gear.
Always wondered this myself. There has never been an example of good writing in a Japanese game. It's always completely melodramatic nonsense and embarrassing to listen to.
god i wish that was me
while i mostly agree what do you think is good game writing so we can be fair and tear that apart too
Not him but stop projecting
thats it, im learning japanese
not him but u r homo
I, too, enjoy the subtle and nuanced story-telling of western games.
I don't know why people get so angry with shit like that, it's a different language and culture, i just see those things as regional dialects, people that share the same language and even the same country have different ways to express things and it's pretty normal, so for a translated language to have their own quirks due to how the original language works shouldn't be seen as that outrageous.
A lot of the problem with the lack of subtlety and “anime” infecting everything that Japan shits out is due to the bubble. There’s a metric fuck-ton of nip films and novels that are objectively great, even the low-budget slashershits being made during the bubble bursting period are good thanks to budget constraints spurring creative solutions.
Anime makes money and otaku are a safe, stable market to cater to. Investors want to make money, everyone involved wants to make money, so they cater to the lowest common denominator. You can say it’s like Hollywood and their lust for capeshit dollars, if you want more Zig Forums memes, but the reason the overall quality of jap storytelling has diminished is because you aren’t the market for their shit. The equivalent of bronies and other forms of manchildren and söyböys are their target market.
You can’t demand, or even expect, gripping drama. It is unreasonable and unrealistic to do so. I’m sorry, but it is what it is.
I'm not a weeb i'll admit but I hate how the desire to make everything anime-like has infected Japan to sell it to the rest of the weeb world.
No. They really don't. Japanese is a shit language.
I thought it was cringy first time playing it but I do think its an appropriate line after learning about 2B's lot in life and what the androids consider to be "God". And of course it synergizes with the ending theme/final boss theme lyrics being from 2B's point of view asking "God" for help.
Nier's localization is garbage, almost rewrite tier.
No, that's just good translation vs bad ones. You're just a clueless cuck.
