Pixel-Art Thread

Why have big companies stopped making games with great pixelart? While indie and fangames has/have good pixelart like Sonic Galactic and Crosscode, they aren't as good as what the bigger companies could do.

While fighting games are a big example of this decline, many other games/series have moved to 3D/2.5D like Megaman, Castlevania, Metal Slug, and the Mana series.

1. Hard to sell. Normalfags want the prettiest graphics and pixel art isn't seen with the same lens as Kratos' butt pimples
2. Expensive. SNK went bankrupt once because of it. Alphadream too.

Look at this fucking website. Look at how many of these mouthbreathers disregard videogames just because they have pixelart style. Do you seriously question after that why publishers choose 3D even if it looks like shit over pixel-art?

List ONE(1) time anyone here disregarded a game because it had pixelart.

Literally any pixelart game. I am not gonna dig through the archives any time someone starts a thread on indie game with pixelart and some faggot comes screaching "pixelshit", The most recent example - Scott Pilgrim re-release.

This.

Hard sell as already mentioned, requires significantly more skilled people and can't milk the consumer for cheap texture swaps like in 3D games.
I think the indie scene is moving away from the 8-bit aesthetic and to the 16/32-bit one and the different in quality is much more noticeable now, you can tell amateurs from pros very quickly.
Anyway, Natsume is making their third remake project, Pocky & Rocky as expected, and it looks pretty nice. I wish Capcom got in on this and remake their old games, decently priced and smartly budgeted but companies who get a taste of AAA figures are never going to try anything else even if sinks them.

As history proved time after time no one gives a shit about v and its not a good representation of the actual market.

With that said, when threads shit on pixelart its usually because it's cheap low effort hipster pixelart, but when someone posts here good pixel art usually its 99% praise

Looks great. Is there a release date?

"3d is the future" meme since Star Fox or even earlier.

So far all we know is that it's coming for the Switch on 2021. Makes sense but hopefully it won't be exclusive. Ninja Saviors was one of my favorite games of 2019 and I want to give this a shot.

Summary of article: consumers are idiots so we must cater to idiots

Pretty much. Games with less effort put into the art sell better/ get better reviews.
Pixelart got such a bad rep because of indie mouth breathers that put 4 pixels together and call it pixelart. It's a disgrace. It's absolutely amazing visuals when done correctly and with actual effort.

Yeah, unless you like working for free.

you know he's not wrong but he also makes phone games so it's unsurprising that his core userbase are absolutely retarded beyond any reasonable expectation.

Low effort indie shit deserves to get shit on, pixel shit or not. And the only pixel shit games that tends to get posted are the latest low effort indie shit that's getting shilled by their devs.

Because big companies stopped making 2D games in general.

My take on it as well. He didn't want to sound like he was throwing the towel but it's the only away to stay afloat.

I get the feeling it will just get worse, 16-bit inspired visuals seem to be in right now so the quality of the pixel art is going to be a lot more noticeable. Just see any "upcoming pixel art games" video on YT and almost none holds a candle to the classics.
Like the thematic or not, Blasphemous was one of the few entirely new indie games with remarkably competent pixelart and even the devs admitted they got super lucky with hiring a really good pixel artist.

>Pixelart got such a bad rep because of indie mouth breathers
The average consumer has literally no awareness of some literal who indiefags like that, in fact the average consumer would probably think classic Capcom pixel art and lazy indie shit are the same. What you're talking about is the average Zig Forumstard's issue. The wider issue with video game pixel art and art styles in general is the fact that the average person will only ever care about MUH NEXT GEN GWAAAFIX and nothing else.

That screenshot has just made me really interested in it.

Is Blasphenous a worthwhile purchase?

I do agree with what you mention in the first part of my post: it takes alot more effort to make good pixelart for a whole game than it takes making a 3D model and then animate it.
Why did you cut the quote in half ? There's nothing wrong with indie devs that actually put out good pixel art. By mouth breathers I mean devs that pump out pixelated mush and call it pixel art.

>he STILL believes that this shithole is worth shilling to
I wish I was as delusional as you.

I'm okay with it, we still have tons of indie games using pixel art and they're usually better than AAA anyways.

How to achieve this kind of pixel art?

trace queensoft games until you get it

It's okay. I would compare it to a combination of Dark Souls 2 and a mario maker level where the guy who made it only tested it by playing through it once. Very pretty visuals and good atmosphere though.

Be extremely superhumanly talented
Practice for long periods of times, referencing original art
Maybe one day you too will be among the pixel art kings

It's a game with simple mechanics that's mostly influenced by SotN but also has elements from G&G and a zest of DaS. The visuals and sound are top notch and probably the main hook, it's also refreshingly lite on backer shit. The core gameplay is simple but solid, the devs don't have much pedigree but it's clear they want the game to be the best it can be. It was recently patched with NG+ which has its own exclusive content and other QoL changes (they even redesigned a shitload of rooms) and there's more on the way.
It goes on -50% sale very frequently and even then, its release date asking price of $25 is IMHO more than fair.
I enjoyed it and got my money's worth out of it. If you like Metroidvanias with a shitload of secrets and illusory walls, Inquisition-era aesthetics and comfy guitar, it's worth it.

gee boss i dunno

>learn anime anatomy
>limit yourself to 16bit colors
>use dithering to shade things
>keep your lines consistent in thickness
>make the backgrounds just as detailed as the characters
it's not easy, but doable

honestly with something as detailed as this, you can start with something drawn normally and make it look like pixelart afterwards

Shilling doesn't mean that anymore.
Anytime a game gets constant threads around it's release, despite it having zero interest before or after, it's shilling. Regardless if it's genuine anons or marketers. Shilling is just a blanket term for a game getting spammed by one of two guys despite there not being any real interest in it. For example, all of the Black Souls threads you see on Zig Forums are shilling.

>Make 4 different layers and adjust opacity as needed
???

obligatory

>people wanting to discuss a game is now shilling
Jesus fucking Christ.

there's no opacity used on that gif though, they're just using every second row of pixels for the foreground

Yes.

I guess we'll just stop talking about video games. Let's go back to our regularly scheduled twitter screenshot baits.

ill never be able to achieve this, fuck my life
