Thinking about playing System Shock 2 for Halloween. Does it still hold up today? Should I go through vanilla or is there a recommended mod I should install first?
If this isn't worth it, would the Bioshock games be good substitute?

It only holds up if you're able to stomach late 90's "milk carton" 3D graphics.
Given how you're already reticent to play it due to the age, just go with the Bioshock games.
You should do the visual mods that update the textures to 4k
It keeps the soul and makes the game look really fresh without changing anything
Also makes space look like space instead of just dots on a black background
Yea the older graphics really won't phase me much. I mean in terms of overall gameplay and scariness.
>recommended mod
kys
No mods. NewDark only.
i think it's godlike in atmosphere. and if you like collecting weapons and secrets. it's for you
Its zoomer time. Played through it a month ago really good game story wise and music wise but for over all scariness i would have to go with the first one instead
There's a very good texture mod that updates everything to a modern resolution, but the fan model pack is garbage that is better avoided.
Shame the best weapons are so uninspired. The best weapon in the game, the rifle, is a glorified handgun as you never fire it full-auto.
It holds up, but SS1 is leaps and bounds better.
>SS1 is leaps and bounds better.
>i would have to go with the first one instead
Times are changing.
SS1 was always the better game. Only R*ddit praises the first for retro cred.
I meant that they only praise the second, not the first
I can't say I'd consider either System Shock to be better than the other. While following a similar design philosophy, they end up having very different gameplay, graphics aside, but I love them both either way.
No one talked about it before NightDive rereleased it. I played System Shock: Portable a few years before the ND re-release and there was no discussion anywhere online. It was analogous to the general public and Fallout 1/2,
Nobody cared about SS1 until the remake got announced.
>Still no word from NightDive about Enchanced version
SS1 and SS2 are both very good games, both with their own strengths and atmosphere. But SS2 is definitely the scary one, hell I wouldn't even call SS1 horror.
Two different EEs have been released you retarded nigger. The remake is probably years away because Stephen Kike is a fucking con-man.
Yeah, they both have their strength, but I prefer the strengths of SS1 more, and even it's flaws, although that's sort of subjective (I find the UI in SS1 to be highly unique and wish more games had something similar, for example).
>having a designated time of the year for spooky stuff
do americans really?
I did, got shouted down. Played SS Portable with mouse look mod. Literally what EE was on launch. IMO, switching between mouse look and freemouse on the go is actually a great idea for a game
Remember which one it was? Seen one called SHTUP
Yes just remember that Shodan is a trans women
>Literally what EE was on launch
Yup, I thought the first EE launch /was/ SSP. They're identical.
>I did, got shouted down
Yeah, the general consensus was that SS1 was unplayable DOS trash even though the mouselook mod in SSP fixed it completely.
>Yeah, the general consensus was that SS1 was unplayable DOS trash even though the mouselook mod in SSP fixed it completely.
And now everyone claims they loved it from the beginning which I'm calling bullshit on.
not him but I use SHTUP and a few texture mods.
Why is this a thing, why is she a trans icon? It's weird.
the fuck are you mumbling about dumb cunt. nightdive announced ss2 enchanced, with qol improvements and fully working multiplayer. twitter.com
I believe it was that SS1 didn't have voice acting originally so some of the text files referred to Shodan as a he. When Terry B voiced her they forgot to edit a file and thus some people immediately jumped on the "she's a tranny" bandwagon instead of just seeing that it was a mistake.
oh yeah ss2:ee, lmao, my bad
I was still thinking about ss1
