Should I play it?
I mostly enjoy JRPGs like Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, and Tales; But I'm always turned off my turn based ones like SMT and Final Fantasy.
Dragon Quest is the only JRPG I have never played, so I'd like to hear if it's worth it or not.

Only play the definitive edition
Jap voices and orchestral soundrack, plus tons of QoL and some extra content.
There's a pretty big demo available maybe I haven't checked since launch, give that a try, the gameplay is still the traditional turn based
when will the switch version ever GO ON FUCKING SALE
wait until re release on all platforms, then you will get a sale
I have good news to you, user.
What is it about turn based you don't enjoy?
That's really all there is to the game aside from a nice little story.
There is a massive demo on switch as in several hours, and I'm guessing you have one if you've played xenoblade. Give it a shot. I'm pretty close to you on games and I didn't love it but worth a shot at least
Pirate it and if you like it buy it, or just keep playing the pirated version
Try the demo first
It literally is 50% off right now for me. Thinking of getting it myself.
Honestly, no. As far as turn based games go it's fundamentally one of the "worst" due to how classic it is, in other words, just how RNG dependent every layer of its combat tends to be and how little strategizing there actually is in each of them. And other than that the game is a (really fucking pretty) wet fart of cliches and "tradition" that offers nothing interesting if you've ever played a JRPG before.
It's the quintessential JRPG. For some people that's a good thing, but for people who just aren't that into JRPGs it's just a neatly packaged but ultimately boring piece of shit with absolutely nothing of value in offer.
this must not be for america cause i literally just checked the eshop just now
zero taste
The Switch is region free. Just create a 2nd account to access whatever eshop it's on sale in. It's a fucking amazing game, but definitely play the demo first to see if it's for you, because it's as old-school turn based as it gets.
I was tricked into buying it by the Kotaku review and it's honestly one of the worst games I've played.
The game is just walking through empty fields to the next boss fight, as you don't have to fight any of the enemies along the way, and even if you do fight them they're all unbelievably easy (even with hard mode adjustments on). There's essentially no strategy to fights due to the types system having almost no effect on damage, as well as not being explained anywhere on the English language internet effectively. Battles start, the attack you choose is basically irrelevant beyond choosing between dealing damage vs stat debuff/buff, so pick any. Repeat. The game actually knows its fights are boring, because it gives you an auto play feature!
And that about sums the game up. Walk from one end of a field to another, watch boring cutscenes, start the boss fight, and then let the game play itself or mash the action button. I don't like when people describe it as 'classical' or something to that effect, because it's just boring. Old RPGs aren't boring, but Dragon Quest 11 is.
DQ11 is one of the best modern JRPGs. I think it’s going to be as highly revered as DQ8 down the line, it is completely great
I agree
Wait for the S ver to come out on game pass
Emulate the PS2 version of Dragon Quest 8 if you want to experience the franchise before you spend money, it's a great game.
Change your region, dumb fuck.
You can buy anywhere.
fuck, error.
when the definitive version is cracked for PC
>was tricked into buying it by the Kotaku review
That's weird, considering how everything you complain about was addressed in that review.
It has an incredible amount of heart and soul put into it.
t. big fan of Tales, FE (old and new), all 3 Xenoblades, and FF.
By the way, FF isn't turn based bar a few select games.
>FF isn't turn based bar a few select games
You seem to have gotten that backwards, as 1-10 are all turn based.
>b-but muh atb
Fuck off, if the combat takes place using menus then it's turn based.
I, II, III, and X are the only turn based ones. ATB is a real-time thing, menu or not. Xenoblade 1 and X's arts are also just a glorified menu, too.
enemies don't wait for you to take your turn with ATB, you'll die if you just sit there without pressing anything
>ATB is a real-time thing
The combat isn't real time. ATB just affects the turn order.
I like dragon quest 11. It is nice and comfy :)
Get the demo for the Switch version and see if you like it. If you don't, then whatever, it's totally free and at least in the time you spent learning you aren't a DQ fan, you at least learned something that can influence future purchases. Never buy a game you aren't sure you'll like if you don't have to, which is never since most games nowadays either have free demos or are available through rental services like redbox or gamefly.
>Should I play it?
yeah, it is pretty good
No, enemies will attack if you dawdle. "A" stands for Active.
