flamelurker is the first place i ended up. but there's also an outside bit? and deep into the tunnels there's a lava river. i thought i could roll about in the lava and grab the items quick, but nope.

Get the fire resist ring, near Patches.
Magic weapons, even with minimum stats, deal way more damage to him.

Yup. It's the spell that you get from the Old Monk's soul and it's broken as shit. For it to hit you have to pretty much jump on the face of the enemy but when it hits it hurts a lot.
