I wish Seifer was the main character. Squall looks like a fucking sissy.

Seifer was a bit of a sperg. He was obsessed with that one B-movie Laguna acted in with the dragon and the princess, to the point that he chose a gunblade as his weapon and imitated Laguna's stance from the film. This is also where his dream of being a sorceress' knight comes from.

The only other person in Garden who used a gunblade was Squall, so he decided obviously Squall has to be his rival. Squall didn't really care about any of this shit but later moments in Disc 1 show that he did have a lot of respect for Seifer in his own way. Often when the party are acting like kids or idiots he thinks to himself that he wishes Seifer was here, or wonders what Seifer would think about x or y.

The fact that Squall is incapable of really expressing his feelings properly but still respects Seifer, and Seifer's urge to have a rival, leads to them "antagonizing" each other in a way that most of the other students and even Quistis doesn't really understand.

He was giving everyone a hard time, he only seemed to give more shit to Squall because he would sometimes push back.

Basically this, but it was also childhood behavior coming forward in a way neither of them understood. It's like when brainlets ask why Squall was so uncomfortable about Quistis and her behavior towards him. Part of it was that he wanted to be a professional and he wanted to be able to respect and rely on the authority figures in his life, so his instructor acting inappropriately jostled him, but it was also a lingering Westermarck effect from growing up together. He just didn't understand the meaning behind his inherent disgust.

Why would it be a Japanese thing? Squall fears abandonment so he doesn't let anyone get close because then he'll feel bad when they eventually abandon him too, nothing inherently Japanese about those kinds of feelings

On a recent replay, I noticed that you could actually remove her from the game after the IFRIT CAVE and exactly nothing changes
She has zero contribution to the story after that, she is simply there.

Well OK I'll be fair, she does decide like a retard to have the entire backup group abandon their posts during the sorceress assassination so she can "go back and apologize" to Rinoa, which is arguably the dumbest thing any character in the game ever does. It's even dumber than Squall jumping into space.

As cool as that was, I don't like how he basically disappears from the story after that fight, only to be seen again in the epilogue where he's laughing and fishing with Fuujin and Raijin

I don't fucking know I played this a long time ago on Playstation! I did see screenshots of the HD remaster and they censored Siren's BEAUTIFUL golden pubic hair bush (they covered it with a skirt or something) so there's that... If they censored Ifrit's fiery dong-mane then I would definitely skip on it because why would you waste your PRECIOUS TIME or MONEY on a game that doesn't have SEXY MALES in it

SquareSoft thought it would be funny to have a smart person like Squall surrounded by a bunch of retard party members for the whole game. Youd act like Squall too if you were forced to endure everyone hes exposed to.

Most Japanese RPGs make a focal point out of a certain adolescent teen male fantasy, like being the loner no one understands because of a tortured past, or the badass coolguy who never lets anything bother them. VIII's pretty cool for using the "I'm the only one here who isn't an idiot" power fantasy. Especially how it doesn't write itself into fulfilling that fantasy like most of them do, but by making Squall confront the immaturity of it and see how much he's like the people around him.

FF8 is the thinking mans FF. Truly the only FF worthy of being called art.
