The animators and art directors pool their knowledge and skills to produce a character that fits the role of "attractive female" for the protagonist.
The advantage of 2D drawings and its lack of detail compared to a real lion is that the viewer fills in the blanks subconsciously which makes the character come to life to them specifically.
