The only wasted potential is in not being more ambitious with the main games and keeping it safe (and cheap) instead, but as a franchise it's hardly wasted.

I interpreted it as wasted potential for being good, not necessarily for making money.

They could possibly make more money from the games by adding more microtransactions and lootboxes to the game, but they may want to play it safe and only gradually test what people will tolerate to make sure to not ruin the profitability of the franchise.

I've just accepted that Pokemon will never fulfill it's potential and honestly, a lot of people probably wouldn't like the game if it went all out with what (you) see as it's "potential". Therefore (you) shouldn't even bother thinking about it like some future Pokemon game will come and fix everything, (you) should take what (you) wished Pokemon was and make that your own game. It wouldn't be as popular as Pokemon but that's just natural when you're making it what (you) specifically want it to be. But who cares, just go forth and make your own game from the shit (you) wish was in Pokemon, because lord knows that it'll look nothing like Pokemon in the slightest when you're done.
