Spongebob's new animation style is such a pain on the eyes. Cartoony expressions can be great, but when they throw a bone so often, it loses its charm very quickly and comes off as filler for jokes and good writing, not to mention that there's no breathing room for any calmer scene.

He worded it poorly, but he's right. The new animation directors had worked on Ren & Stimpy. They abuse offmodel animation to the point that there's no onmodel moments to deviate from. Everything is just so flamboyant and in-your-face, it's obnoxious. It's like a George Lucas special edition

There was a sudden writer and animator change somewhere around there where the quality of the series dropped like crazy.

the first 3 are the good ones, 4 is when the post-movie decline starts.
some picky people don't like season 3 either but it's better than anything after it. 4-6 have some decent episodes but season 7 onwards is when it goes full zombie.
