because the gameplay sucks

RTS is already a niche genre aimed more towards PC players. So off the bat a console RTS, even on the more casual side as Pikmin, was always going to be a risk.

But what really twisted the knife is said console RTS games were all released on consoles that did poorly as is. Switch is the first time Pikmin was released under a successful console.

You need to think carefully or else your army dies, and some people do not like seeing those cute things die

they all thought it was pokemon

>Switch is the first time Pikmin was released under a successful console.
Pikmin 1 and 2 were re-released on Wii, and the motion controls were way more casual-friendly. Inb4 ports, 3 Deluxe is a port too.

First installment was released when video games were still frowned upon and the main audience were kids with no money. Too cute for adults at the time.
Other installments were released on consoles barely anyone had/used to play actual video games.
That's it.
If nintendo had ported the whole trilogy on switch instead of just 3 the series would have gotten a ton of new adopters, but they're retarded.

I forgot about that.

It was successful enough to get a few cool clones like Overlord and Little King's Story at least.

It's actually too hard for most people. First game had a time limit, second had dungeons of pure death. Third I didn't get around to playing. Plus your dudes are cute little plant people that no one likes to see die! I think it's all these things. They are wonderful games but not in a way mainstream gamers can appreciate is my guess.

Pikmin outclassed those but I liked them too.

it, jus t like the other nin toddler games, was cringe

I feel a lot of people skipped over the piklopedia and treasure notes, the emails and never got to know Olimar like you got to know him in pikmin 2. I'm hoping pikmin 4 brings his family to the planet like the movie swiss family Robinson meets the movie the martian. It will never happen so I guess I better get started on my pikmin fanfiction while I cry that they will never make it.

I don't think young men read anything in games.

I did, and still do
Also are you implying young women read anything ever?

I loved it, but I stopped playing after the 2nd one.

It never intended to do that though

I got a brochure or something in the mail for Pikmin as a kid, and my mom liked it and said it was the type of game I should be playing. That literally put me off it a bit, I wanted to try GTA3 instead.

It was boring from what little I played. Just constantly waiting for mundane shit. It's like animal crossing but doesn't have the "design your house" parts that make AC appealing to women

Not sure. Pikmin is a charming series.

>mainstream
Consider how many more words you need to accurately describe its genre than other games.

"control an army"

3 is very easy honestly user. They're justified adding the difficulty modes. It made me want Pikmin 2 for the dungeons again. Honestly I 100% believe a little more marketing would go such a long way.

>It's actually too hard for most people.
This is true. Everyone I've introduced the series to has been shit at it. I think you need to be interested enough in it to want to put in the time to get decent at it.
About the first one in particular, I've seen a lot of people say the time limit stressed them out to the point where they didn't want to keep playing it, but I think you need to be okay with the fact that you probably won't make it on your first try. On the other hand once you get familiar with the game, the time limit might as well not even be there it's so generous.

Time limits aren't fun.

It requires a modicum of planning and patience.

No fun with time limits, cheating to stop time makes it too easy.
Can't win game sucks.

The time limit is what makes the challenge meaningful.

The mainstream audience aren't fans of time limits.
That's like the main reason why most people dislikes Majora's Mask, and how Capcom Vancouver removed the time limit in Dead Rising 5.

Time limits are okay in some games. Goddam, some of you fags really just want everything to be the same bland hog shit.

yes.

The RTS genre is already niche, and console RTSes are kind of a hard sell. Until the Wii rereleases with the pointer controls they didn't fully make it click, honestly.

On top of that, the major appeal of RTSes to people who are into them is the competitive multiplayer, which the series doesn't really have (the multiplayer modes, while present in 2 and 3, are nowhere near the same). Also RTSes aren't usually so cutesy so this also puts off the core RTS fanbase.

With Splatoon they kind of "Nintendo-fied" competitive third person shooters and I guess in a way Smash "Nintendo-fied" fighting games and both of those made the genres appeal to an entire new audience, but those genres already appealed to more casual audiences and were played heavily in a way that RTSes don't really enjoy.
