Same reason as every other route gate in the early ganes, they act as transition areas since the gameboy couldn't load enough of the map at once to have multiple areas connected directly.

I hate how they split Ecruteak and Cianwood into two different songs with different moods. But both VASTLY inferior to the original. Hell, the anime version is one of the few Pokemon songs that can make me cry.

That GB music isn't even accurate. Listening to tracks side by side and you'll be grossed out by the HGSS's versions.

Haven't played SS in a while but I think I remember noticing that. Some were more noticeable than others iirc.

And also in the newer games, reason why Hoenn was the TRUE peak, or at least Emerald, I was kinda sad to see them return in gen 5

Gen 2 was the peak. The remakes were better but they were still based on gen 2s greatness.

I think the Cyanwood version does a good enough job at trying to live up to the original. I don't think the Ecruteak version is particularly bad either, but the original Cyanwood/Ecruteak theme is such an iconic track, having your first exposure to it in the remakes be a complete remix of it was a huge mistake.
