Most DOOM era FPS have atrocious level design
The Quake era introduced better level design

this game devolve into key hunting most of the level like doom does?
and hows the sequel?

>this game devolve into key hunting most of the level like doom does?
Nope, it barely even has keys. It's a lot more modern like later shooters, OP is a shitposting zoomzoom.
>and hows the sequel?
Better, but I prefered the visuals of DF1. The "early 3D" is janky as hell visually.
Thankfully nowadays that can be remedied somewhat.

It was pretty good actually. More varied than most shooters of that era which were usually a bunch of repetitive corridors. in DF every map was distinct and memorable. After all those years I can stil remember certain parts like sewers or prison

use the automap

I was very disappointed Dark Forces 2 had almost 0 music in the game. The shitty midi tracks of star wars tunes in DF1 were great.

It had a lot of atmosphere and had just the right amount of grittiness for a SW game. Kyle Katarn was always either lonely or outgunned. You never felt safe or comfortable, except for a couple brief places.

those midi tracks in DF sounded incredible on gravis ultrasound. probably the best use of midi i've heard in a game

No one ever said that this game holds up. No one even bothered making a source port.

The lightsaber bosses are absolute garbage though. Pretty good schütgaem though

The first two levels are great. Then I never beat the sewer level.

The 1 vs 1 ones are fine, it's the Ornstein and Smough one that's pure cancer.

>Then I never beat the sewer level.
Unironically the ONLY bad level in the game that's basically a casual filter. All the levels after it are more in style of 2nd level, just more expansive obviously.

could be because the source code has never been released?

You philistine. You uncultured swine. DF has fantastic level design, as does its sequel. The levels are sprawling, employ verticality to great effect, contain environmental storytelling cues and naturalistic design...

There was, at some point long ago, an attempt to port/remake it in Jedi Academy's modified Quake 3 engine. I think they made three levels.

I'm pretty sure there are Doom clones with good fanmade HD ports, source code or not.

>No one even bothered making a source port.
Why are you lying?
There's two.
DarkXL which got abandoned because the author got cancer and died, but can still be played to completion with only a few minor issues all of which are fixable, biggest of them being that you'll just need to noclip through a door after final boss because it doesn't open.
And then there's the new source port currently being worked on.

compared to its contemporaries, Dark Forces' levels were very sensible and realistic.

Doom source code was released in the late 90s which made the job much easier.
There was a mod for jedi academy which was supposed to be a very detailed remake of df. It took years to make the first six levels and was abandoned at that point. It was much more ambitious than a doom port for wad files. DF modders were recreating all textures and maps from scratch, and iirc even cutscenes from the original game

Dark Forces 2 is fucking sweet, dude. I just replayed it and the controls, shooting, and level design are all great. Anyone who says otherwise was just filtered and couldn't find their way around without being constantly told what to do like a child.

DF2 has music all through the game. It's remixed film music but still, it's fitting.

I dropped it at the sewer level.

>I was very disappointed Dark Forces 2 had almost 0 music in the game.
What the fuck are you talking about? Sounds like you played the bugged and broken Steam version without patching it.

if you pirated it or bought digital then you'd be missing the CD that has the music on it.
It's not that great though, just rehashed tracks from the movies.

Filtered little zoomie bitch

Your impotent rage makes me lol. Retarded boomer.

Filtered little zoomie bitch.

What didn't you like about it? The levels were pretty straight forward and not too maze-like to get lost in.

Not him but the Sewer level is very maze-like and extremely easy to get lost in, it's pretty much the only level in the game that's like this and is effectively a casual filter so I can forgive it for that, but it's genuinely a bad and not fun level at all.
Not a single other level in the game stood out to me as bad in any way other than this one.

Every fps before Half Life(and goldeneye) has atrocious nonsensical level design. I quit falling for boomer fps recommendations and came to grips the genre before Half Life was just complete shit.

Exquisite bait

Yeah, I'll concede that. It's also full water with enemies you can't kill until they sprout up in your face.

>sneaks into and shoots his way through Imperial bases to blow them up
>neuters the Hutts
>raids the imperial security bureau
>hijacks a correllian corvette from a refueling base, then uses THAT to infiltrate the imperial flagship because it swings by the super secret base that's building the super droid stormtroopers

They didn't even need to make him a Jedi, he was badass enough as he was.

Dark Force is pretty "eh" but you're telling me that Dark Forces 2 isn't fucking amazing?

Yeah I love retro FPS but this game just sucks. Its ugly as fuck, the maps are boring, and they implemented console-style lives instead of quicksaves.

Just play mods for Doom/Quake/Blood/Duke/Shadow Warrior/etc if you're starved for FPS action.
