Main reason average person would invest time and effort to get good at dota is to have their moments of sick 1vs9 win in a highlight. It could be one game out of few dozens but it will be worth it.

Valve were continuously changing game so that it became harder and harder to make impact with your solo effort. Right now you need to be among under 1% of best players to have chance to win against wishes of subhumans in your team, if you aren't 1%, every game is a coin flip with loss costing you a hour of your life. Alternative is only to play with 5 men premade. Apparently there wasn't enough people playing 5 men premade to keep it alive lmao.
