Run around, pick up things, check the map to see if there's any rooms you did not visit.
It is really not that complex, but you may have to run around a lot if you don't know where to go next.

The game sort of expects you to die and reload saves or start again with a better familiarity in mind. Not always the case mind you but realise user that the map the game provides you is essential. I believe REmake even has rooms that tell you if they are clear of items or not.
