Is this the logical conclusion to Metroidvanias? Nothing comes close.

Bugged shit.
it doesn't do anything more than other metroidvanias
Its the greatest game ever made.
For game development it IS the new Metroid / Castlevania. Plenty of knockoffs popping up.
It was lacking in some part, mostly the movement options that you unlock are rather basic and flavorless, and while they did the job hey didn't help the main character feel distinct from the archetypal platforming hero, which is pretty bad. Spells could have helped but they feel weightless and generic, so again a miss there. I mean it's functional and pretty good, but it's too safe and the gameplay experience doesn't feel distinct. The closest thing it has to that is downslash bounces, but they're not a viable strategy most of the time which sucks since it's the most unique thing the character can do.
Hopefully Silk Song and Hornet gameplay change that.
Not really, it just incorporated a lot from the Souls games, had great non-linear exploration and was overall really good.
There is no perfect Metroidvania since you can add and subtract stuff from other genres.
Conclusion? It's literally the beginning of the genre. I'm not even shitting you. The metroidvania genre has been such a giant fucking meme for years. You have metroid, which is really good but obviously old and fairly small by todays standards. La Maluna is the only game to really improve upon the genre in substantial ways and it wasn't until Hollow Knight we got a massive, highly polished metroidvania that really shows just much the pseudo-genre has to offer.
It's actually quite embarrassing how long it took for a game like hollow knight to come out
Dark Souls is basically the 3D equivalent of symphony of the night
absolute fucking retarded post.
Nice counterpoint
so which boss filtered you
Silksong is better.
indeed
IMO Rabi Ribi handles nonlinearity and storytelling better than Hollow Knight does.
One thing about HK that doesn't get praised enough is the hints and signposting for secrets. Breakable walls are ALWAYS cracked or highlighted in some way, you're never blindly slashing at walls for secret passages.
that was a joke user
Calarts flash tier shit
Wasn't sure if it was, and given that it's Zig Forums I went with the guess that someone actually disliked the game just to be contrarian. ie. look two posts up from yours
I raged pretty hard a few times in White Palace though
You don't think that Super Metroid established the genre, or at least became the watermark?
Wtf, I love calarts now.
What new ability in DS opens up new parts of the world?
signposting secrets means they are no longer secret.
also there are a few unmarked breakable walls/floors.
sometimes I wonder what it is like to have such low standards and shit taste
it must be wonderful, to be able to enjoy and be amazed by the simplest most mundane shit. every new game/movie/form of consumable media is a masterpiece that cannot be topped, until the next marginally different and entirely interchangable flavor of the month comes out. what a world to live in where low effort garbage is experienced as nothing short of perfection. I wish I could experience it.
That's my point. Metroidvania as a term is retarded, they're just metroid-likes. In the 26 years since super metroid has been out there have been very little games that actually try to take things to the next level. Even if Hollow Knight clearly takes a lot of Souls inspiration it's the only game to truly have exploration as good as SM while also having good, well crafted combat. The movement systems are admittedly fairly simple but extremely effective in how the game uses them.
I haven't personally played La Maluna so I can't comment on that but i've played a lot of so called "metroidvanias" and the genre has been a heap of nothing outside of HK. Even castlevanias post-SotN, which I love, I wouldn't consider especially amazing with it's level design, movement, and combat.
to be great, it would need to have an actual story, and frankly, it would need to be a little easier towards the end
the white palace can be cheesed with the right tokens, but for many people it turns into true difficulty
there is no reason for such a meaningless and arbitrary final boss like the 'radiance,' some bug god thing that is in someone's head? (there's no reason to care because its obvious that the writers dont care either) to require multiple attempts to kill it
super metroid got replayed many times, this only gets one playthrough
>movement options that you unlock are rather basic and flavorless
Sure, but with the added benefit of a down strike resetting a double jump or dash, you could be very mobile with enemies about.
> Breakable walls are ALWAYS cracked or highlighted in some way, you're never blindly slashing at walls for secret passages.
That passage to where Dung Defender is sleeping isn't highlighted in any way.
Also, the "moving floor" effect needed to be more pronounced. You barely see it.
What kind of games do you enjoy, user? Perhaps you'd like to share these great media you speak of
i want a game with Hollow Knight map, content density, content quantity and level design quality, with movement and combat like in Ori 2
For me, it would be the best of both worlds.
Metroidvania is a fanmade genre. Why is it stupid? Because devs didn't catch on and realize that there's demand for a specific combination of genres and elements? You could say that it's obscure, but stupid? What do you mean? We should phase it out? It clearly took hold and has a commonly-understood meaning.
Which Metroidvanias have you played? I'd be interested to hear what you have to say about Rabi Ribi.
hollow knight is a poor meteoidvania with too little upgrades (charms are not upgrades) to justify how big the world is. Too many levels also blend together and the constant trek through city of tears is a pain in the ass. it's a good action adventure game on the merits of its combat but the exploration is lacking.
