You can enable the dev console by first clicking on `Blacksmith Workshop` and then clicking on the `Advanced ...` button under the `Keyboard` tab. Check `Enable Developer Console` and you should now be able to open the console with the grave key (`).
This game is pretty old, and really likes to crash after alt-tabbing. I found that running it in borderless windowed mode really helped. You can do this by adding `-window -noborder` to AoC's steam launch options. Don't forget to change off of 4:3 if you need to and bump up your rate as well.

If your game crashes due to alt-tabbing, right click on the game in your Steam library then go to properties, then toss this into your launch options: -windowed -noborder This'll make the game run in borderless windowed mode.
