Just finished this. I'll just get this out of the way but this SHITS on Asylum. It's better in nearly every way. This is what I was expecting when I heard about the Arkham series making you feel like batman. Despite that it's not entirely perfect.
My issues were mostly relatively small nagging things: 1. A lot of stuff is still context sensitive and this will never stop being annoying because it makes controls inconsistent. Also for whatever reason, the ground takedown move is so much less consistent in this game than it was in Asylum which is a problem because it's the primary way to finish a guy off .
2. The very few areas that City felt slightly worse than asylum were building complexity and Riddler puzzles. Even then, they're not that much worse but it is a noticeable decrease. The buildings I can understand because of the switch to full open world but there's no reason for like half of the riddles being so weak and boring.
3. Random armed guards on rooftops. There's so much to do and you have to constantly be moving. For you to suddenly come across 7 snipers on rooftops and for them to all know exactly where you are because the AI is fucking stupid is just a huge waste of time. Instead of going to do that fun thing, you have to spend time taking these guys out in the slowest way possible.
4. Why is catwoman even playable? she feels so shoehorned in. she's sexy and all that but she serves almost no purpose. why did they even waste the time on her? she's barely in the story and you play her for like 20 minutes. Felt like fanservice like the nonsensical clayface reveal at the end.
In the end, the game is a solid 8/10. I wish some of the side quests weren't so boring because there are a lot of them and you feel compelled to at least do some of them. Pretty big step up from Asylum but it's still got a couple weird quirks.
Origins, as it is the closest one to city (which plays the best imo). Knight is either great or terrible depending on if you like the bat mobile.
Lucas Green
Yeah I hear Knight has references to Origins so I'm going with Origins first. Plus, Origins is the one I initially saw trailers for that made me want to try the series. I'll be really let down if it sucks
Parker Roberts
Forget about batmobile and knight its superior to city in every single aspect
Jace Powell
Asylum has the better aesthetic and keeps the interest and intrigue much better. You make okay points but origins is way better than city. Knight is the only one I genuinely didnt like though.
Joshua Ward
This game is truly great. A reminder of a lost age where sequels could be reasonably expected to improve over their predecessors. Origins is underrated but not quite as good, and Knight has some cool shit in it but overall is a severe drop in quality in most aspects
Jaxson Evans
I mean the aesthetics are really similar so i fail to see the big difference you do in that department and I actually disagree about the second point. You can definetly burn out on side quests in City but I found the main story much more engaging that the Asylum one
Carter Morgan
>forget about the batmobile I wish the game would let me
Julian Morris
I hated the Batmobile but the rest of Knight was very good, I still wound up liking it more than City.
Blake Rivera
>a lost age where sequels could be reasonably expected to improve over their predecessors I really don't get this sentiment but maybe I have to play more mainstream games. Of all the games I've played, sequels being better is the norm
Andrew Kelly
Understandable. I see asylum more as a metroidvania experience where as city feels more like the average super hero game (spiderman 2 or that ps2 superman game) I just think the experience as a whole is much better in asylum but that's my opinion, either way they're all fantastic except knight imo
fighting the tanks is fun, riddler puzzles and racing shit is pure cancer
Robert Perez
>deathstroke reappears >his entire personality is nothing like Deathstroke >beat him in a bossfight completely identical to one you already had earlier What a fucking waste
Jose Bell
The stealth segments are also garbage
Jack Long
Fighting the tanks was fun but you do it SO many times. Keeping the Oracle assist mechanic for more than one fight would have helped them stay fresh.
Robert White
that's probably contributes a bit to why i don't like asylum that much. I mean aside from city having better combat, investigation work, mobility, freedom, etc etc. I don't really enjoy metroidvanias so that might have contributed a bit. I still think asylum is like a 7/10 at least though
Aiden Sanders
he's a big guy
John Peterson
Knight perfected the combat, play Origins first so you won't feel the downgrade. Personally I think the story is better, it gave better depth to Batman and the music made scenes much more badass. This version of Bane completely triumphs over Asylum and City and the boss fights are much better.
Hudson Ward
Fucking filtered. Its one of the best stealth systems in video games. Nothing is as satisfying as watching the enemies shit bricks when the realize how fucked they are
Xavier Rodriguez
I'm hearing a lot of good about origins from Zig Forums so why do people outside of Zig Forums hate it?
Nathan Lopez
Most people thought it was worse than City so it got ripped to shreds. I do think City is better but I felt the level of hate was unfair. By no means is it a bad game, its pretty good in its own right. I just don't think its as well balanced as City, and some other things like the sidequests and boss fights were not as good.
Brayden Green
They got filtered at launch because the game was buggy.
Aaron Peterson
fair enough so I should expect it to be worse than city then. hope it's not super dragged out then
Samuel Campbell
Is it worth buying that Harley DLC?
Ian Peterson
harley DLC? oh that thing at the end? that was crazy short but pretty fun. playing as robin was a nice change of pace.
Sebastian Carter
Not really. It was alright but amounted to basically a pretty typical Arkham City mission. Batman acts like a total edgelord in it though for whatever that's worth. If you can get it for really cheap might as well
Noah Watson
the game is on my backlog but on PS3, which no longer gets sales so no, it wouldn't be cheap.
Wyatt Perez
idk what to tell you then. If you like the game and want to see what playing with robin is like get it. I wouldn't say its essential but its not bad
Thomas Myers
The quality doesn't quite compare to the Rocksteady games but it's a very enjoyable bottle episode type story which takes place over one night. I don't care about capeshit outside of video games.
Sebastian Lee
>Its one of the best stealth systems in video games. user pls
Jack Morales
The batmobile itself isn't the problem. Driving around is fun, the puzzles and races and pseudo-bullet hell encounters are fun. It's just the shitty, buggy as fuck copypaste tank bosses that ruin it.
Luis Moore
Better than the elder scrolls type shit 99% of games use
Nathan Barnes
Objective improvement over Asylum for sure, but as someone who has 100%'d every Arkham game, this is the weakest, even weaker than Asylum. I'm too fucking lazy to go in depth so I'll just leave it at being my personal opinion, cause I definitely see why it's some people's favorites.
Josiah Flores
well how long is it then? I think it's like only 10 euros but I've bought full games with all DLC for half of that.
Dylan Morris
Stealth is like 1/3 of what you do in the game and there was never even an attempt at light and shadow as a mechanic. In a Batman game. 11 years after Thief and 7 years after Splinter Cell.
Gavin Hernandez
>improvement over Asylum >weaker than Asylum ????????????????
