Martial arts

How to get into martial arts as a 20 yo?
>lanky, not under or overweight, never really done sports
Which sport do you recommend? Serious effective stuff > karate discipline stuff
What can I expect? Most people enter this stuff at a young age right?

Boxing/Muay Thai and BJJ
everything else is a meme

what about kickboxing?
wrestling is pretty serious ive heard but you gotta be built for it right?

>you gotta be built for it right?
No retard. You build yourself up by practicing those sports.

It's not either you're a wrestler or not from birth, that's fucking stupid.

Go to a gym and work with a trainer. Be ready to get hit on your head when you start to spar.

be wary of kickboxing gyms, unless you're in Europe

you learn from the best
leave humanity behind
and become a rick dom

go to a gym and drop your ego, also have fun and dont care what people think

Not OP but what do you mean by this?

Not sure where to go for a straight boxing gym. There’s shit like 9-round but that’s not really serious, and most everything else around seems to be kiddyshit mma (like specifically for kids), how do you guys jump in?

I want to try wrestling as a way to boost my grappling, but the only class in my area is focused on wrestling in MMA and features punches as well. I've had 2 concussions before and I'm wary of brain damage.
Would it be a bad idea to go to this class or not?

don't fall for cardio kickboxing meme gyms

Just sign up for a bjj gym, most reputable gyms have a basic striking program.

Most places offer a free trial. Go to some classes and see if you like it.

Watch out for McDojo shit. A typical class should include some sort of conditioning. Most classes are structured Warm-up -> Drilling Techniques -> Full contact sparring (you won't be sparring for the first few months most likely).

General tips: Don't spaz the fuck out, remember to breath, and prepare to get your ass kicked by manlets and women

my dad used to tell me this, he was very tall and lanky like me so the shorter wider guys would get him easly. he still wrestled because they got free memberships for gyms and stuff
wym by this? im from eu btw
starting at home, pushups and a bar, i tried gym when i was younger and i saw less results than now, it just made me super tired.
bruh...

>bruh...
?

if there is literally no mma, boxing, mt, bjj in your area maybe look for judo... also if you're in college see if there's a club wrestling team that accepts beginners... but if there's a meme 9rd gym there has to be something

so bjj is the best? most of you seem to agree. gonna look into it
i just feel sorry for you thats all

well in Europe (especially Holland and close by) have high level kickboxing gyms... but N. America has a lot of gyms claiming kickboxing are literally just cardio classes aimed at women

> watch for mcdojo shit
>no sparring for a few months
dude fuck that

I know my uni usually offers it but because of the wu flu I don’t think they’re going to do any this semester. I’m halfway hoping that Gold’s near me has a bag or two that I can practice on

I can verify that. But if you get a gym that practices sparring you should be good, right? Ideally one that encourages the members to compete.

Hello fellow norwegian ;=) Start with juijitsu if you're lanky, leverage strength can be very advantageous (look at Tony Ferguson). Secondly do kickboxing.

>i just feel sorry for you thats all
Sure, but can you give me a straight answer to the question or are you going to keep on being a faggot?

Its to keep retarded white belts from breaking each others bones until they can learn some control

Usually the beginner class has a more restricted sparring (aka 2 minute rounds, positional sparring, up-down-out)

Vale Tudo, Muay Thai, or Lethwei.

And that's from someone who has studied "classical arts" for years.

If they don't train for real - you're not going to be able to fight for real.

I asked the question in the OP
I dont know the answer to your question

I though you were just being a dick
As for the OP, decide whether you would prefer to grapple or to punch and go from there. If grappling, go for bjj or nogi grappling. If punching, boxing or kickboxing if its a good gym

where can i find teachers or schools that teach value tudo or lethwei?

how did you learn ?

well.. yes im leaning towards kickboxing, especially since Im not that wide so grappling is a concept hard for me to grasp

>be wary of kickboxing gyms unless you are in Europe
European kickboxing aka dutch-style kickboxing is basically MT without elbows with a higher concentration on low kicks vs mid kicks. And the competition scene is very intense in Europe. Basically look what striking art is the most competitive where you are at and train it.
>In Europe? train kickboxing
>In America/England? Train boxing
>In Thailand? Train Muay Thai
Few exceptions exists, but in general if you train let's say KB in NA you will absolutely get wrecked by a dude that trains in Holland and basically has fight tier sparring twice a week.

I'm not that guy, but you can't really. Lethwei is only JUST starting to get international martial arts attention, and Vale Tudo is overshadowed around the world by regular MMA. Closest you can get is a Muay Thai or MMA gym that has trained some serious competitors.

In 10 years I bet we'll start seeing more and more Lethwei.

You won't. So stick to whichever striking art with aliveness is popular around you.

Thoughts on BJJ vs Judo

Judo is more focused on takedowns/throws, BJJ is more focused on ground grappling.

If you're looking for self defense, BJJ is more practical
