how good is using a bicycle on the road for cardio? it's a lot of fun but i feel that i could get better cardio by just running the same distance

I think both are great. Both have given me great results and I couldnt place one above the other. I like running. I think its down to personal preference really.

Cycling is less explosive cardio, so you'll last longer with less intensity. Just keep increasing speed, if you train your legs you'll increase speed pretty quickly.

I can run at like 8mph, but can cycle closer to 20mph. So do a time comparison instead.
Cycling for 1 hour at a good pace, with some small hills mixed in will burn around 5-600 calories/ hour.
Running on the other hand on flat, no wind for an hour burns around 7-800 calories/ hour.
This is also why cyclists who are actually kind of good will focus on hills where you have to produce a real sustained effort to keep going.
Triathletes typically focus their training on running and swimming because if you can run at a good pace then switching to the bike is like nothing.
I prefer cycling because I stomp too much when I run and it just hurts.

However, as an activity to be undertaken DAILY, for substantial duration per day, for months, years and decades the risks become quite substantial. You are more likely to die biking a mile than driving drunk without your seatbelt. If you would not do the latter for any duration, why would you voluntarily assume a greater risk on a daily basis.

In addition, UV exposure every day will dramatically increase your risk of skin cancer.

Vertiably, the rational approach here is to undertake vigorous cardiovascular activity that can be performed daily without subjecting oneself to such risks.

As other anond have poster, under most conditions, running for the same length of time will burn more calories, but cycling is better on your joints and will cover more distance, keeping it more "interesting".
I commute to work by bicycle, anywhere from 4km to 10km each way (I work in a few different locations) so I total 8-20km daily.

I have never done leg day at the gym in my life.

I've rode a bike on the road almost daily for 10 years going to/from college and then work. I've been involved in two collisions, both from parked cars opening their doors quickly when I was about three feet away. I've never been involved in a collision with a moving vehicle.
My experience has taught me that the vast majority of bicycle accidents are the fault of the rider.

To be safe on a bike:
Ride PREDICTABLY, that is, don't swerve on the road, change lanes, or turn corners with indicating with your arm raised parallel to the ground

Put a mirror on your handlebars so you know what's behind you without having to shoulder check. Bicycles have no blind spots so you should never be surprised by vehicles approaching from behind.

Follow the rules of the road.
If you're at a red light, stop until it changes. Give way when you're supposed to.
