Tech that you horribly miss

Can we all agree that windows mobile was and still IS the most advanced mobile OS.

Instead of keeping with this bulldozer of an OS they decided to go after iPlebs and make "smart" phones for dumb people.

For those of you who never used one you are truly missing something.

How is it advance? Seems to me you could just run windows embedded compact and make the UI a little to get a similar experience.

Keyboard phones. If the ReadyFx ever gets released i'm getting one.

Also, speaking of Windows Mobile.

Those look pretty sweet. I wish I could have one with a DVORAK keyboard

Full control over all the file system natively. A shitload of softwares and utility.
No jew adds or CIAniggers tracking...

It was a Windows XP in your pocket.

A hard drive. One day, you'll be mandated to store everything in "the cloud." It's all over, no hope left, they won blah blah, but for real

But how can I be mandated? Will they take away my hard drives?

Planned obsolescence.

Winmo > Palm. PalmOS is and always was a toy OS for toy devices.

They'll stop selling newer ones. The ones you have will eventually die out, or just be too small to hold the 3 TB average size of an "application".

(and by this, I mean consumer grade HDs. Only bigtech data centers will be supplied them)

I never used an SSD. Does it affect anything aside from boot time?

SSD is a fuckhuge upgrade coming from a HDD, even a Pentium 4 shitbox will come to life with one.

Since this is clearly tech you grow up with and have special feelings for, I'm gonna go off track a bit and post BBOS 10.
It's a neat OS that unfortunately died too soon. Gesture navigation before it's time and the concept of the Hub is very nice.

accessing cache is like accessing food on the edge of your fork
accessing memory is like accessing food on your plate
accessing HDD is like walking two miles to get food from a store
accessing SSD is like driving to and from the store

Sony made some amazing PalmOS devices, and Forth was a serious development language for them. It was a lot of fun.
Technically Android has some advantages. It also has some disadvantages. But Google ultimately is much more hostile to developers and non-developers, and God, and creation, and unkicked kittens, and unpoisoned puppies than Palm was, and I've long since given up on Android as a platform to be really interested in.

don't miss: youtube.com/watch?v=s4TRhNg4-Sc

Uniform seek time, so on average should be much faster than what you'd get from a platter based drive.

*seek->fetch
Since seek means something else.

Do you just mean HDDs? I could see that, otherwise I don't see storage devices going away completely. That's a pretty ridiculous scenario. It would be inconvenient even for nigger-cattle.

What a wasteful degenerate.

accessing 7,200 RPM HDD is like driving to the store in an Audi. It's both quick and reliable.
Accessing SSD is like driving a formula 1 car. It's super, stupid fast, faster than anything else, and it also breaks like nothing else.

I miss this and rockbox

Thi is the closest inferior substitute but can't run Rockbox

Rockbox is dead as is a good cheap DAP

I can listen to music and operate these DAPs falling asleep, eyeclosed, don't need a phone touch screen where I have to eyeball every FF, RW, Next, etc button.

I'm pretty sure the closest thing you get to it today is the BlackBerry Key2 (2018)

I'm still using a N900 in 2019, and if the ReadyFx never comes out i'll be using it until the end of time.

Is there any reason you can't put them on devices today?
I bought a Sansa e260 on ebay and put rockbox on it. It's been working for 3 years. Freedom is comfy.

Amazingly enough, development resumed just this week after 2 years of nothing.

You can contribute to it if you want to...

I bought a sansa clip+ for $25 10 yrs ago

I know it doesn't mean much now, but Blackberry did port Hub to Android. If you don't have a Blackberry android phone they make you pay a subscription I think

The early ones are ok, the later ones, mid 2000 were pretty damn EPIC

fuck cars I want to go back to horses

Ubuntu Phone sounded cool in concept, it's a shame it never delivered on the premise of a phone being a seamless extension to the desktop.

Its still maintained, just not by Canonical

The one piece of tech I miss the most, is Appleworks. It was my everything-I-needed suite, it quick, simple, and the screen wasn't like M$ Office where it was cluttered to shit.

RIP Appleworks and OS9, the best things about Macs.

Even though it's different, using LibreOffice with the Single Toolbar interface "feels" similar to AppleWorks -- not cluttered like a full suite but not too simple like a plain text editor.

Which reminds me... Claris Home Page, anyone? It felt so easy to create a whole website, powerful but not bloated. There's nothing today that quite fits this niche, everything is either too complicated or doesn't give you enough control. In fact, I still use it occasionally, only I have to keep reinstalling the trial. Anyone got the full version for Windows? (Macintosh Garden has the classic Mac version, if anyone wants that.)

Attached: chp.jpg (640x480, 51.35K)

Why not use an emulator?

That's more hassle than reinstalling the program every month.

I had the misfortune of having one in the year 2012, when it was considered alive but already on suicide watch.
When I wondered why the fuck buttons on my bluetooth headphones weren't working anywhere but in the worst player in the world aka windows media player I found out there was no api for them. So it's up to your player's developer to implement one, and usually they give no fuck.
When I wanted to watch a video, guess what - no api for hardware encoding too. There was a stock player from HTC that used hw, but it played only mp4 with specific resolutions matching the ones produced by stock camera (basically it was there to play captured videos only). So the only way was converting your fucking video like a nigger in 2004, either to mp4 to play it with htc player, or something like avi 320x240 to play in coreplayer so it wouldn't lose 20 frames per second.
So basically, just like Windows, it was an incompetent mess with baggage of legacy shit, and as soon as it was possible it was abandoned by everyone including retards at microshit.

Attached: 14925177419460.jpg (320x320, 19.64K)

Just remove the check. Dump the symbol table from the binary (most don't strip them), and look for anything like is_registered, and then just disassemble that address and look to where the function is returning a 0. Then it's usually a matter of just changing an opcode at the correct address.

This has been Windows' major problem IMO, and they keep trying to distance themselves from it too quickly. Windows RT flopped, the Windows 8 interface flopped, it seems like M$ is going to be keeping part of their OS in the 90s I wish the interface was the same though.

You got me, i'm a wingblows employee shilling for a dead OS

I am on a KeyOne Black Edition and it is the best thing since sliced bread. Love this phone.

Claris HomePage was great back when the web wasn't a clusterfuck of bloated libraries and Pajeet code.

Abomination?

I really fucken miss the Pebble smartwatch. It was great to have a watch that was able to handle smartwatch stuff while not screaming "LOOK AT ME LOOK AT MY WATCH LOLOLOLOL"

I want one of you tards to make the OS downloadable so i can replace the shitty Android OS in my phone.

Back in the day I used NetObjects Fusion. That shit was the bee's knees to pump out shitty websites as quick as possible.

Because they shit on WPF and Silverlight developers and destroyed the world's greatest UI community overnight.

No it didn't. The start menu in Windows 8 was aggressive but the blowback led to the Windows 10 start menu which became the most usable menu of any version of Windows ever.

There is nothing wrong with flat UI either. Programmers don't have artistic skill and don't want to deal with UX-tards so flat UI is best and renders fastest.

The legacy shit doesn't affect you. You don't do anything useful with your computer so you count bytes.

"Planned obsolescence" is another way of saying "ten hedge funds own a majority of Microsoft stock with stolen money and they hate your guts".

I have the Key2 and like it but it's annoying how much neglect Android and their applications have for keyboard input.

Throwing flip phones in general up on this list. Yes, they do still make them, but in terms of power and features they're regressing. Dating myself, but my first phone was the Verizon CDM8975. 1.3 MP camera, 60 MB internal storage with microUSB able to be added. That phone lasted 7 years before it finally gave up the ghost, and two years of that were spent with a hole in the top corner where the hinge had busted apart. Not super capable but a very rugged and reliable phone. When it gave up the ghost I got an LG Exalt II. No external screen just some stupid LED based notification system. Navigating menus was slower, key press latency is horrendous. The 5 MP camera and significantly larger internal screen were nice upgrades, but there is a clear insufficiency in processing power. Durability also suffered with the hinge cracking within 2 years. Ergonomics were inferior with the longer length of the phone resulting in my having to choose between having the speaker above the optimal position or end up breathing into the microphone.

Can't hold onto this though as Verizon is dropping their 3G network which will leave the Exalt II unusable at the end of the month. They hadn't notified me I found out as I was shopping for used phones to part out to fix my current one. Their current stand-in is the Exalt LTE which is directly inferior. It has the same screen as the original Exalt and a 5 MP camera like the Exalt II. Weighs more, slightly longer. They eliminated the monochrome front LED screen so you can not tell who is calling you, you can not tell if you have messages without opening the phone, and you can not see the clock without opening the phone. This is absolutely retarded and severely harms the usability of this device. This is a clear example of the latest model being inferior to the prior iteration.

All other market options are jitterbug boomer shit, are clearly flimsy in the hinge, have worse cameras, or are just as expensive as a mid-level smart phone. I'd switch carriers, but our current plan is dirt cheap for unlimited. There isn't much of anything better out there with other providers though. The only thing approaching a decent flip phone I've found so far is the Samsung Galaxy folder which doesn't play well with most networks, is expensive, and still suffers smart-phone bloat I'm trying to avoid.

I got the same, it's pretty decent knowing this came out in 2005. I found a hacked ROM from Spiaatie enabling it to run Windows Mobile 6.5
It's a good dektop clock/calendar, excellent for playing solitaire, and hell... it's stylish.

As I expected.

The best thing about PDA's is how flexible they were, as customizable as an average linux distro

they just renamed those to smartphone

Best analogy I've heard so far

the last true nokia phone after m$ acquisition and tried to purge Qt project at the same time

you can do that if you had the n950 and ported linux considering it's 2011 arm7a and should have the FPU though too bad M$ bought nokia so M$'s likely gonna patent troll china in case production reopens at some point to protect their pc market from any instance of pc competitor but pockets'.

Isn't the first one the same phone Hillary Clinton used to discuss with the deepstate contact the 8 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ with her self-hosted mail service?

This PDA, the HX4700 was also a phone, this one was manufactured by HTC not by HP properly, when they made the HTC Roadster which was just the HX4700 with a cellular radio module, it still came with these specs and functions, touchscreen and all long before the iPhone was out.
I often heard "lol this is a chinese clone of the iPhone they called it iPaq" despite the iPaq brand is from the 90's Compaqs PDAs, back when Apple didn't even release the iPod. (and unlike Apple it's made in Taiwan, not the commie part of China, therefore respecting my engagement to not buy anything from PRC.)

I doubt it, this is not a phone but really a PDA, and now you make me scared to know Cunton had the same.

Excellent analogy! also Thanks for reminding me to make a backup of my system SSD, but all of my documents and works are kept on magneto HDDs.

what happened to it?

ans speaking of music players, i still carry my iRiver H10 everywhere as my main music player, so i can be free from phone. And I even managed to upgrade it from a 20GB hard disk to a 128Gb compact flash card, and a new battery.
That's enough storage for all my music, it's bootable so I can carry a Linux on it, and keep a few utilities and files other than music/video.
the recording function is also a must if like, you don't want to miss a conversation...

I don't know if iRiver kept with updates but Rockbox made enough audio codec supports, even MP4, so i often download videos from youtube just for the audio. This thing is unbreakable I hate it. There's even an asshole who made PORN of it!

even back in the years ago /g/ was shit. but pone better.

Is windows mobile safe or is it botnet ?. Talking about the PcketPC ones

I miss this kind of phones...
Also fucking keys
Touchscreens are for retards and kids

Fuck everything Apple except the Apple ][ and this. Nothing but downgrades ever since. They were well built, dropped mine a billion times and it never broke. 256 gig for weeks worth of music. The beginning of the end for both MP3 players and Apple.

Attached: 5FD6D346-17DC-4C44-AAD9-F5A0064CD004.jpeg (1200x1200, 806.97K)

I remember being blown away by a coworker's windows mobile 6.0 phone.at a time when apple was saying flash was not possible on mobile, he was showing me functional newgrounds pages on his phone. Much later I got a windows phone and they had already jumped the shark by making it a "smart" phone without granular features and file explorer and flash and such. Defeated the point. I wanted sideloaded apps and a phone that was a computer. We have gone backwards.

I'm excited bros

I didn't know you could upgrade these old players' storage. I'm on my second clip sport but I may actually look at this H10. What's the limit on the storage? I have a 64GB micro sd card in my clip and it's not enough. 128 would be much better but even more would be ideal

Apple ran out of parts for these. The manufacturers for the parts stopped making them so therefore, Apple couldn't continue making them.

Do you think manufacturers could ever stop making iphone parts?

I have a Toughbook M34 that I upgraded with a chinkshit mSATA > IDE adapter and Kingston UV500 mSATA SSD, and even with the back then horribly slow 1 GHz ULV Pentum M it's quite usable.

That's good to know

The marketplace for the kind of parts found in the iphone is huge. There are many telecoms companies that want their own brand on a phone so there will be a big demand for the parts needed to build those phones.

Floppy disks and floppy drives.
I miss cheap human sized removable media that behaves like standard block devices.
USB sticks don't count, too expensive, too small.
Sd cards don't count, physically too small.
MO disks were spot on, but too expensive.

Optical media can't use standard block device filesystems.

i have and tried them recently and only two of them were still readable.

Attached: disgustings.jpg (217x326, 27.25K)

That's fine until you need to write anything.

a 5€ usb stick can easily fit the content of 5000 floppy disks. its not expensive at all because a box of those shitty disks used to cost at least half of the usb stick.

Thanks for answering a rhetorical question

Can someone explain this?

He's talking about nigger-tier one-track mediums, while being painfully unaware about the glory that is DVD-RAM

HTML was pretty good. you could read and publish articles and shit. now i'm back to reading mostly at libraries

I heard that older floppies were very reliable, but in the 90s the market was flooded with low-cost, low-quality disks.

He's right that flashdrives are dirt fucking cheap right now. I do prefer how floppies were more conducive to 1 piece of media = 1 file. Kind of the difference between having individual file folders and just dumping all of your papers in one box. All your info is there in both cases, but sometimes it's nice to have it partitioned very clearly.

Reminds me of what happened with magnetic tape audio recordings. The later ones were worse because the manufacturers found out how to run the tapes slower and slower to fit more audio onto the same space, but as a result the audio information per second was reduced.

laptops with BIOS. nowadays they put fucking OSes into laptops' firmware. with linkers, executables and shit. well if I want an OS on my laptop, I'd install it myself.

I own a Mac mini Late 2006 and it's awesome. You could actually get out the CPU. Installing Linux on there is a pain in the ass tho as the firmware is an noble motherfucker and won't detect Linux LiveUSBs without putting a bunch of files on the drive and "blessing" (changing one bit) in the EFI file you wanna boot (Linux with EFISTUB, Grub2, rEFInd, etc.)

for real cloud sucks. you don't have control over your data and how it's stored. cloud is a random server in some random datacenter, random city, random region, random country, random part of the world. also what you gonna do when you don't have internet? go to your cloud provider and ask them for data?

I want a phone with a QWERTY keyboard. For "coding" in JavaScript while running Termux.

Kek, i was trying to find some 'basic' phone with keys; even they standard have a camera, internet and whatnot. Seems the days for simple/basic in that sense are over sadly. And i`m getting old.

You`ll get used to anything if you use it long enough. Besides; it can create a barrier to think before you write; instead of getting one sentence in 7 differend messages like i got last week from someone. Anyhow if a message were to long/detailed to write i would simply call the person in question.

Underrated post, plus 'it' being normal to memorize phonenumbers from an early age.

Tried to explain that to people, and all i get is weird looks/disbelieve when i say: i`d like to have information (w/e it is) on a physical drive with me. Those are pretty much the same people that laughed at me in mid '00 for buying a 1K+ desktop, while a few years later they buy nearly every year a new phone for 600 each that last not even 1/10th of the time that desktop lasted, but hey the majority does it so then it`s 'normal', kek. The normalisation 'trend' of blindly putting your trust into governments and/or corporations by the masses is flabbergasting to say the least in this day and age.

Phones like the Xperia X10 Mini and Xperia Play. I'd be happy as fuck if there was something like them with better specs and an unlocked bootloader
