VLC Media Player > Say something bad about it

There's one thing I'll give it, and that's that it can navigate DVD menus.
Still, MPlayer, the program mpv is forked from, is capable of dealing with these finely.

VLC is a great program. I prefer mpv, but if I ever need special features for streaming or something I can try VLC.

That's strange because for me it performs better on Windows than Linux. On Linux, sometimes it will get stuck in fullscreen mode once the video is over and double-clicking won't exit it so I have to hit Alt+F4. Also, when I have a few videos queued up it will eventually stop showing a picture when it switches to the next one and play the audio only leaving me with a black screen and causing me to have to restart the program. Seeking in MKV files causes a slight pause and then a few seconds of distorted video.

It barely works on android

You can define define samba credentials to play videos over a network through Dolphin. With mpv I have to use smb4k to mount the samba share in userspace

i dont really like how most distros try to install samba too when i want to install a video player. the video player should not manage network shares.

mpv is better in every way for video. I only use vlc when I need a minimalist music player and for when streaming to mpv doesn't work which happens a lot for porn

Defaults are slightly better, except the UI and keyboard shortcuts. For example, it broadcasts media played to synced devices over KDE Connect and similar software. You can right click and play media (local, network, capture devices) from within the GUI.

vlc keeps crashing for me on win 10. not while playing but sometimes while stopping a stream and sometimes right when starting vlc, before it even starts it tells me it crashed.

I've only ever had that issue on ancient geforce cards for some reason.

VLC is shit. Whenever I click on a recently played file that does not exist anymore it gets cauught in loop, uses 100%cpu and can not be stopped short of killing the process. Why is there no error handling?

I've never had such glithes in vlc, but I don't watch videos often. Maybe a retarded GPU driver causes that. Watching videos on botnettube on windows 10 on my parents' computer caused BSOD, because the driver wasn't up to date.

Tested it on a mkv h264 1080p video. Resource usage is identical. I don't have a bunch of various videos with different properties so I can't make a proper benchmark, but running a video on both players for a minute reveals that they use the same amount of RAM and CPU.

While it is a viable option for a media player on desktop, it's actually quite buggy and annoying to use on iOS and Android. Crashes frequently and isn't very user-friendly because of arbitrary swipe/gesture controls.

This is because some giga-autist decided to compile default MPV binaries without --enable-dvdnav or --enable-dvdread, probably because they imagine it's "bloat" or "insecure":

On Windows I still prefer MPC-HC, but tbqh VLC seems to have improved immensely since v2.x. Since v2.x I haven't experiencing any video artifacts or audio/video sync issues whenever I used it.
