Historical problem with Jews is that they don't integrate and rarely consider themselves as part of the country in which they're in. Jews in the US call themselves Jews, not American, have their own schools, shops, neighborhoods, etc. Jews always played the part of the countryless outsider, who was easy to blame and punish for the country's ills. It was the same everywhere else, except Denmark. Guess in which of the Nazi occupied countries the most Jews (per capita) survived during WWII? Denmark. In Denmark Jews integrated and considered themselves Danish, because of this other Danes considered them Danish as well. So when they heard that the Nazis were coming to round up all the Jews, the Danes helped one another. In other countries there was not a lot of such solidarity because the Jews always kept themselves segregated. They still do to this day. The Roma people, who also don't integrate, are on the receiving end of similar racism and hate, as well.

the thing is you're failing to distinguish pre-modern from modern history. There is a huge disjuncture in jewish history between the pre-modern and modern. If you look at the history, there's a very tight link between number of jews, the wealth of the country they lived in, and the length of time since their emancipation and you can roughly estimate the degree to which the jews were assimilated. The jews of America kept their distinction precisely because they were of a group that immigrated from the poorest jewish communities in the world (eastern europe) and only became a wealth community in a process that took half a century. In comparison, the jewish communities that preceded this eastern european wave of the 19th century were highly assimilated german jews who actually invented "reform" judaism.

and before that the largest jewish community was the sephardic one in savannah which was even more assimilated still.

i should mention they were a nuisance precisely because they complicated the fictional narrative of a pure ethnic nation that "appeared" true in western european nations and appeared the source of their strengths. the large minorities of impoverished legally segregated jewish communities some of whom played a role in the tsarist state as tax collectors and salesmen of the state alcohol monopoly made them a target and an embarassment to their aspirations. I suppose I don't object to Jews being attacked because they were perceived as different, but this persecution on the basis of their being different was hardly their own fault. It was actually codified in law and was seen as a natural model of society in the corporatist structure of pre-modern european society.
