Organization is an incredibly complex topic, I think whole Zig Forums can at least agree to this. But after this there is only mass confusion, and I am confused as well. I am not saying I have all the answers, but I think I have an argument at least.
I've just read a few books on military doctrine and strategy that officers have to read, and I'd like to discuss them with you.
HISTORY
Long and boring and nobody likes it. But history is important for this. Let me make it short.
LINE
Everything changes. Especially when it comes to organization. But I dont mention it for no reason: lines are still important. Lines are the most important thing in armed conflict, where your lines are decides everything.
This is what Napoleon teaches us. You have two lines. Combat and support. Military units today are just that: combat and support lines. Whole point of reading Napoleon is maneuver warfare. There are many important things, but encirclement is basically ideal because it cuts off combatants from the support (food, ammo, communication, water) which causes destruction.
ENTRENCHMENT
Basically everything changes all over again. Because of artillery and machineguns.
Lines are still important. Its just that they gotta be entrenched. Digging a row makes you near immune from combat hazards.
You gotta attack the first few weeks. Every day after that, enemy is probably entrenched and you are fucked. You will need 10:1 ratios to wipe out entrenched (and fortified) enemy.
Static defenses. Entrenchment. Nothing ever happens.
MANEUVER WARFARE
We are back on fast movement, boys! Tank gets invented. Tanks can achieve breaktroughs, which is breaking trough an entrenched line. Tank breaks the line, mobilized and motorized units rush trough, and you entrench around enemy trench. Encircled, they need 10:1 rations to break out, got no fresh food, no ammo, and can be counter attacked from all sides. They are fucked basically. We are back on achieving breaktrough encirclements.
STRATEGIC BOMBING
You can also break those lines by melting them away with attrition, by bombing the living shit out of cities. Bomb cities that supply the lines to hell, and entrenched lines will starve to death.
NUKES
Basically forget everything I said. First strike is the official doctrine. Just strike first.
Ok so now enemy can hide nukes in radio silent submarines, satellites, under your bed, who knows fucking where, if you nuke you'll be nuked too, so just dont nuke, nothing ever happens, basically world peace is achieved.
EVERYTHING CHANGES AGAIN
In the first post I itt I will tell you how internet changes everything. Yes. It is even bigger than the nukes.
