But as mentioned, there is such a lexicon over the years that certain words have risen and fallen and an old set of rules no longer applies. The greatest and easiest mark of a shill is their unwillingness to engage in any real conversation based on logic. Deflection, D&C, porn posting, name calling, etcetera - all of the tricks in a shill's bag are used because they cannot engage in real conversation.

I agree, but my question is worded badly in retrospect. What I mean is, some communities are moderated in a super heavy handed way, and there's no chance for userbase revolt short of going to a different community entirely, and that's usually hard to organize because of the same moderation. Other communities are more or less left alone with nearly no moderation, at which point it seems like the users will argue until some kind of consensus is reached. My opinion is that Zig Forums has become what it is today because of very light moderation through much of its history, and if it was extremely heavy handed (like it's been here for the past year or two) it causes it to stagnate badly and fall apart.

I'm splitting hairs here, but I'd argue that when Zig Forums was created it was to clean up Zig Forums back to a certain state of how it was "before" - whatever that meant to him. Consider it an active intervention, wielding a certain amount of power over the userbase, but not too much because of the power the userbase also wielded. Perhaps that doesn't amount to heavy handed moderation, and that's a fair interpretation. I'd still argue it was a facsimile of moderation.
I completely agree that things were very fast and loose back then, and you're right on about his transformation once he joined Silicon Valley, even at a cursory level. And half-Zig Forums has certainly been more heavy handed with the moderation since. It was an unfortunate irony that the moderation here was even worse for a long time.
