I wonder if some small part of natural selection caused lighter-skin blacks to be a thing in the US, too. Like, harsh winters or something actually weeded out some of the darker skinned blacks at the time, forcing a bit of a bottleneck (which is a lot more believable than every single one of their women being raped at some point). Or even just plain ol' artificial selection when it came to mates, since it's highly likely a lot of blacks at the time saw lighter skin as a one-up over one another.
