Unrelated to the thread, but a funny thing I learned about usury after some reading is that a lot of people confuse the term with the issuance of interest on debt. I know I did, as manipulation of interest on loans can most definitely be used in a predatory sense and is by far the most obvious way people get screwed by banks in modern times.
Usury is actually the pursuit of repayment on debts regardless of the situation the loan was taken under and the outcome of the loan.
The easiest example to show this is a farmer and his plot of land. A farmer needs to buy seeds to sow, but can't afford them so he looks for a loan. His land is fertile, but prone to bad weather, so finding lenders is difficult. The farmer finds two banks willing to give him loans, one that is usurious and one that isn't.
