If people take to the streets (or college campuses) to protest this move, it could have the double effect of not only pushing more whites away from the left (which should be a major strategy at all times) but push Asians out too. The active discrimination against Asians in the recent hubbub over elite schools in Jew York is a good starting point, and getting the left to sperg out over this can open up anti-Asian sentiment around the entire country.
The only people who care about that are the present particular politicians who may have become accustomed to life in Washington, the perks that entails, and aren't sure they've got a lobbying job lined up. In the long run, 2018 means absolutely nothing because of the demographic situation.
