German far-right popularity increases, stays ahead of the country’s center left.
Recent Gain?
"The anti-Immigrant & anti-Islam German AfD Party (supported since last year by the Far-Right Nationalist NPD party) "has moved ahead of the Social Democrats in an opinion poll for the first time, according to a survey released on Monday."
"The Insa poll, which was published by the Bild daily, gave the centre-left Social Democratic party 17 per cent of the vote, with the AfD taking 17.5 per cent."
Political scientists tend to disregard the result of individual polls, and prefer polling averages taken from different surveys. But the Insa finding is broadly in line with recent trends, which show the AfD benefiting from the recent turbulence inside chancellor Angela Merkel’s coalition government.

However, the growing popularity of German nationalist thinking and opposition to the flood of non-White immigrants - made more cohesive by the strategic alliance between the mildly nationalist AfD (Alternative for Germany) party and the "far-right and ultranationalist" NPD (National Democratic Party of Germany) is a trend that was evident at least since February of 2018 - - when a previous Insa poll showed that the AfD had already moved ahead of the Social Democrats.
or has the Right been Ahead since the turn of the Year?
"The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party narrowly surpassed the center-left Social Democrats for the first time in a national poll on Monday."
The poll by Insa, commissioned by Bild newspaper, showed the AfD at 16 percent support compared to the SPD at 15.5 percent — a new low for what has traditionally been one of Germany’s largest parties."
