The U.S. has a vested interest in trying to cause trouble between Russia and China. Although they've had disagreements, they both know they need to live together, so overall they've developed their ability to avoid hot disputes.

russia doesnt need china if it has the US for trade and the US doesnt need china if it has russia for trade, with that said the yuan/gold exchange for russias oil is the main thing the russians and chinese have going for each other
if china and russia are driven close together by US alienation they would certainly align against the US in a global conflict (the original plan) however if the USA cuts off china and manages to establish ties to russia economically it would be entirely possible to flip the tables and have the US align with russia against china in a giant pinscher military maneuver
