Daimler is a horribly run company. They had a cash flow problem that they solved by taking over Chrysler in 1998. Chrysler had $7.5B sitting in the bank and 23% market share in 1998. They couldn't build their crap quick enough.In the luxury market Mercedes was outclassed in every direction and Daimler needed the cash to get back in the game.

And after all that they are back in the same predicament a decade later they can't compete with the jabs (Lexus) and 'Merican's SUVs.
And they sold off Jeep with Chrysler which became a license to print money by FIAT. The Italians also did a good job fixing up the DODGE lineup.
