With all due respect you have a rose-tinted view of past events. The Free State was never created to be a bastion of liberty, it was always supposed to be a corrupt socialist state that benefitted the middle-class Irish at the expense of everyone else. Subsequently, to prevent poor Irish people from becoming cynical of the idea of an Irish nation a myth was invented that he was murdered by the British, but all of this was probably insignificant at the time anyway. Back to the point of Ireland being a socialist state, the reality in modern times is that with a burgeoning public sector in the U.K. these upper class Irish have no need for an Irish state. With mass emigration occuring at figures as high as 50,000 per year at least leaving (and these are all young people, typically the more intelligent ones), no desire for the average Irish person to change the socialist status quo, the bell tolls for thee Ireland. This has all been known by the majority of Irish since the beginning but the full implications of all of the above hasn't until recently, but it is too late to change anything now and the sad reality is, most Irish will use and abuse the State until the day it finally kicks the can anyway.
