A credit score compels people to handle finances in a certain way (ultimately forcing them to engage in usury to some extent) a social credit score compels people to handle every other aspect of their lives in whatever way those running the system (probably the same group who manage credit scores) want them to. It's not exactly the same. But it's close enough. The main difference I can see is that the Chinese score is more susceptible to corruption. But that corruption can be extended to China as a whole.

But if you think about it, your credit score has a very large effect on your life. If you have very poor credit then you can't get loans of any kind. It's hard to find someone who will even rent to you. And I'm sure many employers also look at it when they do background checks on people.

Thinking about it a bit more. The Chinese social credit is very close to a US credit check and criminal background check rolled into one.

The problem with social credit is it doesn't take into account man's capacity for redemption. If someone realizes the truth and is blocked out of society by a permanent black mark, and someone else doesn't believe the truth but lies to the top for his own benefit, that is a flawed system. Good enough for these Communist systems run by the latter type, but not good enough for a government run for the morality and dignity of the Volk.

The way the big tech companies are implementing this currently is to require a phone number to make at account (google, youtube, twitter, facebook etc.). VOIP number do not work. The only way to do so anonymously at this point is to buy a burner phone, and it's obvious they will eventually make buying burner phones without an ID (that gets logged in a database) illegal.
