In the early days, Google's Index was flat and had only one dimension of interpretation. This was back when you could type in monkey and bush junior came up. Or type in the right combination of word and for a decade the exact same NYT article came up. Today they have a guessing machine before you hit the index. If you want to look back more than around 2008-2012 depending on the language setting, you have to use search modifiers and even if you use them, the old combinations don't work in a lot of cases and you have to use site: or inurl: to force the guesser to use the right kind of index.
