This is a 25-year increase over current law in Canada, and these barriers to information will stagnate culture and hinder people's ability to innovate.

And that's only what they're telling us – who knows what else is in the details? One thing's for sure – there will be many more giveaways to corporations at the expense of the public.

Now, Trump thinks he can ram this down Canada's throat by announcing it as a done deal, and we have to "take it or leave it."

This is exactly what happened in the TPP. And we saw firsthand what a disaster the TPP was for digital rights and our democracies.2 But after 5 years of fighting, we won that battle — because of our pressure, Canada rejected the IP Chapter that contained these dangerous provisions.

After that victory, we can't afford to just give it away now in NAFTA. We need to make sure that our trade representative knows that the people of Canada refuse to be bullied by Trump and his corporate buddies. But we don't have much time, and we're fighting back now.

"Cultural protection" clauses exclusively refer to TV shows, music, and 'art'. It made sense to protect it when the communist propaganda was coming from outside the country (mostly from the US) but now its here already and the government has to protect its servants.

Mexico will be buying car parts and agriculture products from the U.S., Canada will be doing the same. Nothing is decided on steel. The U.S. will be buying cars both domesticaly and from Canada and Mexico. China will be increasingly shut out by all three countries.

In essence, this returns NAFTA back to its original form, which was not a bad idea. CAFTA still needs to be neutralized, but in such a way that it does not derail S. American industry…one thing at a time. We didn't fuck everything up overnight, it will not be entirely repaired overnight.

NAFTA was simply a low-tariff free trade zone, its purpose was to build up Mexico as a trading partner, to the same standard of living as the U.S. and Canada. We did the same with Japan after WW2, and ultimately benefited from it. With NAFTA functioning properly, we would not have this massive influx of illegals, and we wouldn't need a wall. Why move to a country where you're hated, if you can make the same level of shekels back home?

While NAFTA takes the blame for everything under the sun, the real problem was always the GATT treaty of the mid-90's. NAFTA may have opened up Mexico and Canada to free trade, but that GATT treaty opened up 4 billion job-starved workers, to compete with Americans for jobs, and willing to work for just enough to afford a cot, some rice, and a little rat-meat.

NAFTA, if properly balanced, will be good for all three countries, in the long run, but swamping our job market with 4 billion people is fucking suicide.
And THAT'S what Trump is working to correct.
