I always understood "turning your other cheek" to be about not getting involved in unnecessary fights. If someone slaps you, the only thing that gets hurt is your pride. There is no reason escalate and start a fight, and turning your other cheek was giving the other person a chance to calm down. I didn't even realize that anyone took it mean getting slapped around was a good thing.

Customs 2,000 years ago were completely different than today, especially in the MIddle East, which still has some of the ancient customs in their societies.
