While what you say is true, dosages and cycles have changed drastically in that timeframe. Current HL treatment is to give as little chemo and rads as possible since it is so sensitive to both. I (IIB) got half the number of cycles someone 20 years ago would have gotten and opted for mixed modality to get as little chemo as possible since ISRT has fewer systemic effects. Current trials are looking at as few as 2 cycles + rads or 4 cycles chemo only. I would be a little more concerned in his case though since foregoing rads usually means more chemo.

Chemo is still a a relatively poorly researched method, i have a family member who lost his stomach and is currently on chemo to prevent further cancer spread, he is feeling better , his blood is great and feels just a bit drained form chemo and its already his 4th cycle. Chemo can kill yes, but it depends on how well the person takes it, it's quite the gamble.
