Thorium power has engineering challenges, such as it only works under extreme heat which makes metals brittle and even concrete can't sustain its integrity for long under such conditions.

That is actually done in the UK. A lot. Theres places like Dinorwig power station. Where water is pumped up into reservoirs then let loose to generate hydro electricity. This is done to very quickly provide for peak demand needs and frequency regulation in the wider network.
Other kinds of power plant are kinda shit at adjusting their output. Nuclear plants require hours or even days to adjust their output in any meaningful capacity. While Dinorwig can turn on 1,728 megawatts in a few minutes. And provide a total of 9.1 gigawatt hours.
People really don't understand how much work goes into power grid management. They think you just plug in a new power station and BAM problem solved.

Anyways, i think the highest potential for an energy "revolution" lies in solar thermal at the moment. Just residential solar thermal alone could provide around 1/3 of electricity needs in the U.S, now imagine people building solar thermal plants all over the place on land where farming isn't viable. It would also mean self-reliance, no one would have monopoly on energy and it's impossible to kill the power grid as people are the power grid. Bonus: if you use seawater in a solar thermal plant that works with steam you can desalinate it for free.
Geo-Thermal also has a lot of potential, we just need better methods to get as close to the earth core as possible.
