It is possible but the process (referred to as non-homologous end joining; NHEJ) is no where near at a level that could be used in humans.

As a scientist I cringe when I read media reports of biomedical studies. 95+% of the time it’s like a clown righting a review of a circus. Furthermore scientists themselves have a tendency to embellish the ramifications of their results because it helps elicit excitement over them, thus helping them secure future funding in a cutthroat funding climate.
