"Obvious" because any well-born individual need only look at her face: it's the face of a psychotic person, her eyes really seem to suggest that she is not sound of mind. This is a reasonable thing to believe because eyes are essentially just a physical extension of the brain and therefore reveal to a reasonable extent its state of being. She's probably psychopathic, too; and that would further explain why they picked her: psychopaths can be told what to do as long as commands seem to result in them benefiting because psychopaths have no empathy, no connection to others. They do as they please.
As for your point meritocracy, it does not matter who is elected because the people presented to us as leads merely hold a figurehead position. There are slight exceptions but there is never such thing as free reign. Even council level politics is controlled by Masons and larger corporations. That's how things work in the real world. It's a place where people with more money pull more strings. And that's why presidents are not in control – because they are not ever really that rich.
