I've been saying this forever. As a species evolves, it has to overcome its own stupidity. The problem is that evolution doesn't function on such a short timeline, so all alien civilizations would have to overcome the stupidity gap. So according to the Drake equation, there must be a ridiculous number of alien races out there, but I would the equation is flawed because it doesn't account for the probability that a civilization won't destroy itself. Fermi's Paradox. There are billions of suns over a million years older than ours. Meaning two things primarily: 1) that there is no chance we are the first sapient life to arise and 2) that any sapient life that arose before us would have achieved a mastery over material technology to the point of creating self-replicating machines which are analogous to biological life in that they can move through space and produce more of themselves from space rocks, and build giga-engineering processes to break down entire planets and even stars to produce more and more and more of themselves.
The benefits of this are numerous and too lucrative for any species to not do it. In other words, with just a million year head start on us, the aliums would have already settled and reprocessed the entire mass of the milky way, and have communications and travel relays in every single star system.

There's two fundamental risks I see for any civilization in a best case "perfect world" scenario for literally everything else.
The former would emerge from prolonged periods of technological stagnation along with high energy demand. Especially if a civilization doesn't account for assigning sufficient reserves for distant future energy needs so it can advance. The latter would emerge from bursts of technological acceleration, where a civilization develops the means to extract more energy from a new source or process, but not enough knowledge to use it safely and reliably.

The explanation to the fermi paradox is extremely simple. It is technically impossible to travel from stars to stars. Even reaching a two digit percent of light speed (which could be theoretically done with a nuclear explosion "engine") you would still need DECADES to reach the closer star system (and no one ever tell you how you could survive such acceleration), let alone one capable of sustaining life and the technical limitations of such a trip (long term radiation exposure) makes it de facto impossible.
At the very best each intelligent lifeform is trapped in their own solar system and as such consume it's finite resources and then go extinct.

The example I gave was for non-intelligent automated robots like bacteria that process space mass into more of themselves. The fact that they could very likely evolve over the vast amounts of time we're dealing with and evolve intelligence is just an interesting side note.
We have machines on earth that can self-replicate. It's not magic. Again your ignorance is showing. In Situ replication is required for interstellar travel and is a major focus of NASA and other space programs. For example, sending a lander to Mars ahead of a manned mission to synthesize fuel caches ahead of time so that the manned mission can rely on having more supplies on arrival in case something goes wrong. It makes space travel much more resilient to failures and losses.
Transcendence is just one possibility, my katana wielding friend. It's not essential to Fermi's paradox at all, it is something I suggested as an alternative to sapiences being wiped out.
