I've always found the focus on Kushner as a force separate from Trump to be distracting and a part of Trump apologies. Trump himself is as much of a problem as Kushner - he recently overruled the intelligence apparatus and gave his son in law a security clearance, despite the fact that he had undisclosed meetings that would suggest a foreign (read "Israeli") influence on his decision making.
