I had no ritual rites of passage as a kid. Nothing to transition me from child to teenager to adult. No defining moment in my life where I had to publicly reinvent myself as a man in front of my whole family and elders.
We used to have ritual rites (like christian confirmation) to help our children transition into adulthood. Now we have no rituals. Now, our rites of passage are almost enitrely materialist: first smartphone, first laptop, first car.
My younger sister recently attended a Bat Mitzvah for one of her friends. I think this is an important and pivotal moment in the young girls life, a celebration of maturity and femininity, a gateway into womanhood.
Western girls, like my sister, do not do this. They remain girls mentally, deep into their adulthood, with childish mannerisms and personalities. Western boys do not spend days in the wilderness fending for themsleves, or kill their first wild animal, they remain video game playing manchildren until something wakes them up (or never does).
How do we save western children and help them transition into adulthood? What rituals, rites and celebrations can we give them to prevent them remaining children their whole lives?

I cannot control who my sister sits next to in class.
