yes, people always talked about extraterrestrials. there is war of the world for instance, but, albeit every single description you can find online saying it's a book about an alien invasion, he actually hasn't referred to the extraterrestrials as "aliens" one fucking time.
i actually think it was john wood campbell who used the word to refer to extraterrestrials the first time in the 50s.
and of course today most young people would think you're a retard if you were to refer to immigrants as "aliens", even though it was THE word to refer to immigrants and describe them as exactly what they are. it's a word from tamil and means of or belonging to another, not one's own. "strange".
