For the first few centuries Christianity was the pariah class that was openly discriminated, mocked and purged from both the state and pagan communities. It's only when christians became the majority and people stopped worshiping your dead, worthless gods did the leftovers of paganism get the dose of their own medicine. They were given basic rights to exist in christian nations. Meaning you couldn't go out and stab a jew for no reason. They clearly weren't protected if jews were persecuted throughout Europe while this law was in effect. This was something that was also present in old Rome, where jewish communities existed in a lot of roman/greek cities and were allowed roman citizenship.
