They were all either Croats or Serbs who had turned to islam since Christianity did not have as strong a grip on the area as it did in Serbia and Croatia and being muslim in the ottoman empire was advantageous economically
This in turn led to them taking muslim culture, architecture, names and surnames
They took the culture of the enemy and embraced it as their identity, when in fact, if you were to look at the lineage of every single one of them you would see proper Slavic names and surnames up until the point in which they betrayed their culture
