A hundred years on and revolutionary spirits persist. Putin is wary of how history could inspire modern revolutionaries. During the Soviet era, the October Revolution was celebrated every year on November 7th. In 2005 Putin abolished the celebrations, creating a new holiday called “Unity Day”.
He regularly criticises the revolution. He said it had “negative” consequences. And in 2015 he declared that it caused the “collapse” of Russia.
Journalist Shaun Walker claims that Putin uses these statements to “downplay revolution as a political tool”. Why? Because, as The Economist argues, Putin himself has become a “21st century tsar”.
Putin is similar to Tsar Nicholas II in several ways. Both sought approval at home through military conquest abroad. Nicholas’s attempt failed during a disastrous war against Japan. But Putin had more success when his 2014 annexation of Crimea led to a surge in approval ratings.
Putin is also an autocrat. The Economist describes him atop a “pyramid of patronage” controlling “all access to power”. Nicholas tried to rule in the same way, declaring his aim to preserve autocracy “firmly and unflinchingly”.
And, perhaps most importantly, both use repression to contain civil opposition. In 1905 hundreds of civilians were killed by the tsar’s troops on Bloody Sunday. While never approaching such violence, Putin has been criticised for repression against political opponents.
“Power is fragile,” some argue. There is a reason Putin cracks down so hard on the slightest dissent: revolutions grow from small beginnings. The Bolsheviks themselves were a small band of men and they toppled a nation. If repression at home worsens and Putin’s luck changes abroad, he will quickly find himself vulnerable.
Something interesting happened yesterday so I am glad this topic is coming up. Remember that Russian transplant who died the other day with the two kids? Well the story made no sense from our media end so I went to check if the Russians on Youtube were talking about it and asked them what they are hearing over there and this was the response (I will translate it since I had to do the same):

I am fairly interested in knowing about ethnic tensions in Russia. It is clear that it is a multiculti state from simply how many ethnicities are under the flag and how Russian media pushes heavily for civic nationalism within its own borders. Pic related gets posted occasionally but haven't seen any information posted alongside it. They didn't topple the nation, they simply took advantage of the situation. The nation was toppled by the military. Commies like to lump together the workers with the soldiers to make it seem like it was a workers' revolution where the soldiers just slighly helped. In reality it was the soldiers that were tired of being slaughtered in greater numbers by their officers than their enemy. Which the workers joined in and the Commies pulled their own way. That is very different to the idea of a small band toppling an entire nation: they simply established the new one.
What about National Bolsheviks? I know that they are pushed as a kosher alternative but how do they fare in comparison? Jail doesn't work that way. You don't get to leave simply because the government is being overthrown, nor do you get to leave simply because everyone in there is starving to death.
Guy I knew in college was an exchange student from Moscow, good guy. Anyhow, he used to rail on and on about Russias massive hatred for China, Africans and Latins. I remember telling him that he basically just said he only likes whites and he agreed and said he has always been angry that our countries would not come together as friends and catapult the species. Of course he came in under his communist belief with limited freedom but left speaking a lot like us and just being one of the guys. He was very similar to us so I could only imagine that most Russians in general are similar.
Very patriotic guy, very family oriented especially toward the Mother which is honored heavily there apparently, but he also said that the country has a special hatred for Mongolia. No idea why that is I never asked but apparently the Russians are ripped off/hacked by the Chinese constantly but the Mongolian people have some big part in that racket and the Russians hate them with a furious anger. Now that I think about it I don't remember him saying anything about the Middle East but he probably hated them too as Russia comes off as pretty race oriented. I don't even think the word "racism" exists in Russian as I remember him saying something along the lines that the phobia/ism words do not compute over or something like that - or the Russians do not use them/they are censored in some way (not sure how).
Good guy though overall. Used to hit the gym together and despite being friends we had that US vs Russia rivalry but it was just back and forth shit talking. Beautiful women from what I have seen, very beautiful in both Ukraine and Russia. Very unique looking women in my eyes.
They are all over the US spying though. All you have to do is find your local workers party and in it you will find a Russian spy as that is how they do their infiltrations and chaos starting in the west.

I meant the ethnic tensions of different groups within Russia. Not ethnic tensions between countries and continents. I want to know what ethnic tensions they have within their own country among groups that have lived there for quite some time. The word exists and people do use it. They also use -phobia a lot, specifically the term "Russophobia" which the West does not. Russian media in particular is very keen on using that term to describe anything they can. Any Socialist/Commie party in Europe is going to be either funded by Russia/China or supported by them. That isn't just me equating anything left-leaning to be Russia, you will find a lot of Commies in various countries supported by them. There are also nationalist parties supported by the Russians but them supporting these parties doesn't mean they stop supporting lefties.

This. A lot of people underestimate how much power the oligarchs wield. For example, from what I have heard, almost the entirety of the Russian media is immensely butthurt about Netflix's Chernobyl series. And only because they think it is an attempt by US media to tarnish the reputation of Rosatom. And as a result they plan on making their own series to try to make it seem as if the US was behind it and sabotaged the plant.
