At least one person is scaling the Statue of Liberty after an "Abolish I.C.E." protest resulted in multiple arrests.
The person appears to be sitting near the feet of Lady Liberty, as seen in helicopter video footage, roughly 25 feet above the monument's observation point. National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis says police are trying to persuade the climber to descend.
The park was shut down hours before its 6:15 p.m. closing time and was evacuated as a precaution, an official told Fox News.
Earlier Wednesday, at least six people were arrested after they hung a banner emblazoned with a message about abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.
