How so? Matt is arguing by anecdote, and Virgil is entirely correct to point out that by and large, right-wingers tend to be older. In terms of views like accepting gays or mixed-race couples, people are more progressive today then twenty years ago, and twenty years ago they were more progressive than they had been forty years ago, and you can say the same about a comparison between forty and sixty years ago. People game more today, young people especially, and we know what the generational differences are in terms of political outlook. Matt's general hypothesis about gamers is completely at odds with what's going on in society at large, and his idea that gaming will somehow wipe out other artforms is silly on its face.

This whole idea of social progress is a myth, so using it to defend gaming is dishonest.

I don't need to defend gaming, gaming doesn't need defense, gaming isn't going away with all the gadgets that are technically capable of running games, and with that technology being everywhere it's not really possible to legislate it away. My point is not defending Trump-supporting racist and sexist gamers (spoiler alert: they are assholes), the point is that these people are a very tiny fraction of the gaming population. (I'm not going to start a discussion why it's important to have a basic grasp of the size of groups as they exist out there in the real world, if you can't figure that out or think it's worthy to have a dispute about whether that matters, you are beyond help.)

I was drifting NRx around that time, but from what I've read most leftists were grateful for Obama after 8 years of Bush stupidity, even if he only leaned liberal. It's hard to understate how the environment at the time drove so many people to rally around Obama in '08 and '09. You still had dozens of troops coming home in caskets from Iraq and Afghanistan every month.

And if you really want to be fair, most of them were disillusioned by 2012-13. Hell, even Virgil was willing to associate with MDE around that time.
