The story is a revolution against the powers that be to forge a new society beyond what those powers deemed possible.

In most narratives, the heroes are the great defenders of the status quo and the villains are the instigators of change. In gurren lagen, it's swapped, where the heroes instigate change, while the villains cling to an eternal status quo. And in TTGL, they don't even have the bit in a lot of "revolution" plots where the villains are portrayed as the "usurpers" of a legitimate power, whatever came before the beastmen and the antispirals is never dwelled upon or looked towards. It's made clear from the very beginning that the only way the heroes will get anything good in the world is by embracing change and the new, while those who would hold back progress are villains to a man.

There's "hero's journey" to it, no doubt, but the meta narrative is purely leftist in a way you don't see in most stories, much less anime. Go ahead and deny it.
